COGEN EXPERIENCE OVERVIEW
Eco-friendly cogeneration from palm oil residues

Eco Friendly Cogeneration“Consistent with its policy on environment, the Guthrie Group ensured that environment conservation for sustainable development continues to be a strategic objective as we move towards corporate excellence. Sustainable agriculture is not just about environmentally sound land management practices, but an integration of the three main goals of economic profitability, social responsibility and environmental health. This is now popularly labeled as the triple bottom line of profit, people and planet.” (Kumpulan Guthrie Berhad, Excellence for sustainability, Annual report 2004)

The cogeneration plant of Kumpulan Guthrie consists of two combined watertube/firetube steam boilers each generating 22.5 T/H at 23 bar (g) and a 2 MW back pressure turbo-generator. The boilers are equipped with dynamic watercooled step grates. The plant was engineered and supplied by Vyncke NV (Belgium) boiler and KKK GmbH (Germany). The expected pay back period is 5 years after commissioning.

CUSTOMER VIEWPOINT

Mr Ong See Boon, Head of Process & Engineering Division, explains,”Sungei Dingin Palm Oil Mill was constructed based on the Eco Tourism Concept. Hence the design of the mill needs to ensure very good conformity with all environmental requirements, in particular with respect to air emission and liquid discharge.

“Vyncke Boilers were chosen based on their design, automation and efficiency. The Dynamic Watercooled Step Grate System ensures a good combustion of the fuel (fibre and shell) in the furnace.

Mr. Ong concludes, “KKK Steam Turbine was chosen for its trouble free operation and very economical steam consumption characteristics as experienced over the years. Its proven reliability, efficiency and good back-up service are the other important contributing factorsfor choosing the Turbine for Sungei Dingin Palm Oil Mill.”

“The Vyncke plant in Sungei Dingin, Kedah includes a moving floor unloading system specifically designed for the palm oil industry. The design has proven to be a cost effective solution towards balancing the fuel fed to the boiler and the steam consumption, especially during the initialising of sterilisers in the mill,” explains Kok Chee Aun .

“The Dynamic Watercooled Stepgrate System, probably the best combustion technology, provides specific control of primary air for combustion and also greatly reduces the formation of ash clinkers. This effectively translates to a long lifetime of the grate.
