COGEN EXPERIENCE OVERVIEW

Efficient cogeneration from rice husk.

Titi Serong Edar Sdn. Bhd is a very good example of a modern and efficient rice milling complex. Its new cogeneration plant consists of a combined watertube & firetube steam boiler with an hourly generating capacity of 12 tonnes of superheated steam at 25 bar (a) and 300°C, coupled to a 1.5 MWe extraction-condensing turbo-generator. The plant was engineered and supplied by Vyncke NV (Belgium) and KKK GmbH (Germany). The expected pay back period is about 3.5 years after commissioning.

CUSTOMER VIEWPOINT

Mr. Tan Shaei Chai, Technical Director explained that the addition of a new 10-tonnes per hour high quality rice mill to the present parboiling plant has led the management to invest in the new cogeneration plant. It generates between 700 and 1500 kW of electricity and low pressure steam for the process. The rice husk from the present and new rice mill are used as fuel. High quality ash is produced as a by-product. The plant was designed to cover the steam and electricity requirements of the whole drying, parboiling and milling complex during the non-drying season; during the drying season supplement electricity will be purchased from the national grid.

During the past seven years, Mr. Tan was satisfied with the reliable and highly efficient European equipment used in the rice mill. From this excellent experience, equipment from European companies was selected again for the cogeneration project. These European companies include Vyncke nv (Belgium) for the boiler, KKK (Germany) for the turbine and Cimbria A/S (Denmark) for the complete power plant erection and installation, as well as the supply of the drying, storage and conveying systems.

“The valuable advice from COGEN 3 experts, in highlighting the viability of the cogeneration process, convinced us that it was an excellent investment for our company,” concluded Mr. Tan.

SUPPLIER VIEWPOINT (KKK TURBINE)

KKK PlantMr. Albert Cheong, Senior Manager with Jebsen & Jessen Technology (M) Sdn. Bhd. explains: “The Titi Serong Edar Sdn. Bhd. project was a major challenge to us. Our client was not looking for the purchase of an equipment, but for a customised solution to take care of both his power and heating requirements. We always present ourselves as a nontypical equipment supplier, but as a solution provider and system packager with tailor-made systems to satisfy our customers’ needs.

For a 16 tonnes per hour rice mill, with seasonal demand for process heating and power throughout the year, we have to offer a cost effective and flexible system to take care of both the seasonal imbalance of heat and power demand. We, therefore, offered a KKK twin extraction-condensing steam turbine. The flexibility of this system is that it can run in extraction-condensing mode to supply heat and power during the drying season, but can also run in a fully condensing mode for power generation alone during the non-drying season. The heat load changes need a customised solution for the cooling system to cater for heat load changes in the condenser during these two modes of operation.

COGEN 3 has been a major contributor to the success of this project in that it prepared a pre-investment study and provided the technical support to our client for the equipment and system evaluation and selection.”
