Efficient use of wood waste for kiln drying activities in Thailand
AT A GLANCE
This wood processing company produces flooring (parquet). Large amounts of residues are generated. Instead of being dumped or incinerated, sawdust and wood shavings are being sucked by a pneumatic collector system and used as a source of energy in the boiler supplying hot water to the kiln dryers. The plant capacity is 1,250,000 Kcal/h.
BACKGROUND
Wood processing industries such as parquet flooring factories face wood residue (sawdust, shavings, ..) collection and disposal problems. Instead of using conventional fuels (bunker oil, diesel, gas, ...), wood residues can be utilised as a source of energy to supply hot water to kiln driers and hot presses.
LOCATION
The plant is located in Sra Kaew, about 250 km of Bangkok (Thailand).
TECHNOLOGY
The plant consists of:
- a suction plant for wood-working machines;
- a silo with a capacity of 250 cu.m.;
- an automatic extraction and boiler feeding system;
- a sawdust burner;
- a hot water boiler with a nominal thermal capacity of 1,250,000 kcal/hr;
- a fuel gas cleaning system;
- a kiln drying plant.
SOME ECONOMICS The total investment cost of the above-mentioned equipment is ECU 155,000 USD 180,000), excluding civil works. The pay-back period is less than 3 years due to the savings made from no longer having to dispose of wood residues, nor having to use fuel oil for the boiler.

CUSTOMER'S VIEW POINT
"The Aree Group of companies has been involved in the wood business for about 15 years," explains Montree POOSOMBOON, Deputy Managing Director of Areechai Woodtech Co., Ltd. "The premium quality of our product can only be obtained if the wood is dried before being processed. We also require a dust free environment for processing the wood. The price of the equipment was very competitive, even compared with locally made equipment. It requires almost no maintenance and the efficiency of the boiler is even higher than we expected."
