(EC-ASEAN COGEN Programme Phase II)
A 600 kW power plant for a paper company in Thailand AT A GLANCE
The power plant consists of a 600 kW back pressure turbine coupled with an existing locally-made rice husk-fired boiler producing 24 tonnes of steam at 20 bar. As 15 tonnes of process steam at 6 bar are necessary, part of the steam is sent first to the turbine, instead of passing through a pressure reducing valve in which case no energy could be recovered.
BACKGROUND
Most agro-industries need steam for processing heat and power. While industrial boilers produce steam at one given pressure, the process often requires steam at different pressures. Extraction and back pressure turbo-alternators are designed to cover both process heat and power requirements.
LOCATION
The plant is located in Panom Sarakham, about 130 km. East of Bangkok (Thailand).
TECHNOLOGY
The equipment, consists of a single stage back pressure turbo-alternator. The inlet pressure is 20 bar. It supplies 15 tonnes/hour of process steam at 5 bar to the papermill as well as 600 kW electricity.
SOME ECONOMICS
The total investment cost is ECU 88,000 (USD 102,000), excluding civil works.
The savings, from no longer buying power from the grid, represent an annual income of ECU 238,000 (USD 276,000), resulting in a pay-back period of less than 4 months.

SUPPLIER'S VIEW POINT
"This project is one of the most profitable that we have ever implemented. Its pay-back period was only a few months," comments Pramuan CHOTIWAN, Product Manager with T.I. Engineering (Thailand) Ltd.
"We were very pleased that the COGEN Programme decided to make a showcase of this project as its replicability is very high. It should encourage other people in the wood and agro-industries to implement similar cost effective and profitable projects."
