What did COGEN 3 do ?

COGEN 3 promoted the implementation of Proven, Clean & Efficient Biomass, Coal, Gas Cogeneration Projects by facilitating business partnerships between ASEAN industries and EUROPEAN suppliers. COGEN 3 was in operation in January 2002 to December 2004. This website will be available until 2015.

Wood waste for a 1.65 MW power plant in Malaysia

AT A GLANCE

The 1.65MW wood waste-fired power plant consists of a boiler supplying steam to a fully condensing turbine. Power is being supplied to the mill, while part of the steam is to be used for kiln drying.

BACKGROUND

Homet Raya Sdn. Bhd., a member of the Rimbunan Hijau Group recently invested in a cogeneration plant. They will cover all their energy requirements by controlling the combustion of their wood residues instead of undertaking environmentally damaging incineration.

LOCATION

The 1.65 MW power plant is located in Tanjung Manis, Sarikei, Sarawak (Malaysia).

TECHNOLOGY

The plant consists of:

  • an automatic feeding system;
  • a boiler with a capacity of 30 tonnes per hour of saturated steam at 22 bar;
  • a fully condensing turbo-generator (1.65 MW);
  • a flue gas cleaning system.

Twenty tonnes of steams are used for power production as ten tonnes are delivered to the kiln driers.

SOME ECONOMICS

The total capital cost amounted to ECU 1,662,000 (USD 1,994,000).

Thanks to the savings in term of diesel and bunker oil, the pay-back time of the project is expected to be around 3 years.

CUSTOMER'S VIEW POINT

"The Rimbunan Hijau Group is one of the biggest groups in the Sarawak wood industry," explains David TIONG, Director. "We have 5 sawmills, 3 plymills and 2 laminated board plants. We are also producing veneer, particle board and furniture. Environmental protection is one of our main concerns. We consider ourselves as pioneers by our attempts to reduce our fossil fuel consumption through optimizing the use of our wood wastes for energy."

"We prefer European technologies even if they are slightly more expensive. We use many within our group," adds David TIONG. "They are environmental-friendly, durable, and require little maintenance. Their running costs are much lower than other equipment. Therefore, we generally accept to pay a reasonable price premium for European products."

"The support of the COGEN Programme has been crucial in the selection of the power plant," comments K.C. CHEW, Project Development Manager. "It offered additional guarantees to ensure the optimal performance of the plant, thanks to the training and monitoring activities accompanying the implementation of the project."

SUPPLIER'S VIEW POINT

The cogeneration plant bought by Homet Raya for its Tanjung Manis timber processing complex is a complete turnkey plant supplied by Aalborg Industries Singapore, a member of Aalborg Industries of Denmark. The strategy of Aalborg Industries in the ASEAN region is to develop local production of well proven European energy equipment (mainly boilers), in Indonesia and Singapore, with strong back-up by Danish engineers

."Aalborg Industries has a large experience of working with biomass fuel wheat straw in Denmark, as well as wood residues in Asia and Brazil," says Hans-Henrik JENSEN, Manager of Boiler Services at Aalborg Industries Singapore. "Our main target in the region is to supply environment-friendly turnkey plants using fossil fuels and/or wood residues."

Aalborg Industries has conducted a lot of development work in burner and control systems to optimize combustion and heat transfer either for grate or fluidised bed systems. Adds Hans-Henrik JENSEN: "... this means we can propose highly efficient and really compact European equipment at a competitive price."

The power plant includes a steam turbine from Nadrowski, a German company represented in Asia by Jebsen & Jessen (J&J) Malaysia. "Nadrowski steam turbines are simple, proven and appropriately designed for the ASEAN market," says M. H. LIAN, Manager of the Turbine Division with J&J. Their power capacity ranges from 200 kW to 5 MW.

"But what is really important is that we don't sell a product, we sell a solution." Today, Nadrowski is a market leader in supplying turbines to the palm oil industry. "In ASEAN, we are more and more active in the wood sector," says M.H. LIAN, "and we are strongly looking forward to extend our activities in the rice and sugar industries."
