(EC-ASEAN COGEN Programme Phase II)
A cogeneration plant for a wood complex in Malaysia
AT A GLANCE
This cogeneration plant supplies all the electricity needed for the complete factory (sawmill and moulding), as well as 4 tonnes of steam for the kiln drying operation.
BACKGROUND
Sim Hoe Wood Industry Sdn. Bhd., has recently invested in a new sawmill and moulding factory and decided to ensure its energy self-sufficiency by cogenerating electricity and process steam through the combustion of their wood wastes. LOCATION
The project is located in Bentong, 90 km north-east of Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia).
TECHNOLOGY
The plant consists of:
- an automatic boiler feeding system;
- a boiler producing 16 tonnes of superheated steam at 22 bar,
- two turbo-generators for a total capacity of 1.5 MW.
SOME ECONOMICS
The total cost for the power plant amounted to ECU 1,343,000 (USD 1,611,000). Thanks to the savings in bunker oil, diesel oil and wood disposal, the project pay-back time is expected to be around 3.5 years.

CUSTOMER'S VIEW POINT
Sim Hoe ranks among the major wood processors in Malaysia. The brand new manufacturing plant at Bentong - set up in 1993 - comprises of two types of operations : a sawmill exporting 75% of production, mostly to Europe, and a window frame factory exporting 100% of its output to Europe (mostly Germany). SUPPLIER'S VIEW POINT
Vyncke, a European company (based in Belgium), supplied the boiler plant. "This project is a very good example of Vyncke's approach when supplying an energy plant," says Fred SCHWEITZER, General Manager of Vyncke East Asia. "We start from our customers' needs in order to supply them with a tailor made boiler plant. In this case, the main requests of the customer were to be rid of his wood wastes and to satisfy air pollution regulations. Thanks to the flexibility of Vyncke's technology regarding fuel characteristics and steam load of both the wood drying and the power unit, Michael DETURCK, who was then the Vyncke Manager for the Far East, and our engineers, were able to design the exact plant needed by Sim Hoe."
"The automatic fuel feeding system of the installation is also a strong advantage of this plant," says Francis HIMPE, Marketing Support. "Clean energy technology is the motto of Vyncke, and you cannot achieve exhaust gases standards of Malaysia without automatic fuel feeding and accurate air control systems."
In Asia, Vyncke is now looking in various industrial sectors producing biomass residues, such as wood, rice, palm oil, cocoa industries, even bamboo. "Our strategy in Asia is to go for turnkey plant supply but using local subcontractors," adds Fred SCHWEITZER.
"The COGEN Programme is helping us to build references in ASEAN and hence to reach our objectives. Moreover, the support of the COGEN Programme in training our local manufacturing partner in our workshop in Europe was of prime importance for them to better understand the way we manufacture biomass boilers. We forecast that in the near future, Asia will represent 40 to 50% of our total turnover."
The turbo-generators of Sim Hoe were supplied by Jebsen & Jessen (J&J) Malaysia, representing Nadrowski turbines (of Germany) in Asia. "Our concept is the total approach," says M.H. LIAN, Manager of the Turbine Division with J&J. "We want to be really involved in the projects of our clients. A significant advantage of J&J is to offer a complete turnkey plant for power generation, based on Nadrowski turbines which are very well adapted to the requirements of the ASEAN energy market."
