THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION PROVIDES ASSISTANCE FOR A PROJECT USING RICE HUSK AS FUEL

Phnom Penh. In a three-day workshop (25-27 November) at Sunway hotel, participants discussed COGEN programme, one of the seven EU-ASEAN cooperation programmes between the European Commission and ASEAN, which includes also Cambodia.
Mr. Winston, Chargd d' Affair of the European Commission Delegation in Cambodia, said he is particularly pleased to announce the first-ever Cambodian Full Scale Demonstration Project using rice husk as fuel, which to be implemented before the end of 2004.
Mr. Chargd d' Affair also said that this first Cambodian successful project is among the 33 project proposals submitted by other ASEAN countries. Of these proposals, 24 have been selected under a grand of 6.8 Euro.
Mr. Winston has expressed his support to this first Cambodian project and stressed that the European Commission fully support the government efforts in rural electrification using agricultural wastes as fuel for a decentralised energy supply system. Currently, the European Commission provides 30 million Euro a year to support rural development contribute to poverty alleviation in Cambodia.
Mr. Ith Praing, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy, said that currently the Royal Government of Cambodia is reviewing the Policy & Strategy for Renewable Energy-based Rural Electrification in Cambodia. He stated that the efficient use of any source of primary energy, either fossil fuels or biomass/biogas, through cogeneration, entails a fuel saving which can reach up to 50 %. Cogeneration can help mitigate global warming and climate change and is environmentally friendly.
In addition, Mr. Secretary of State said that Cambodia has received an approval for the first-ever Full Scale Demonstration Project for the Angkor Kasekam Roong Roeung Co., Ltd. at Ang Snoul District, Kandal Province, which will help realise rural electrification plan using cogeneration.
