RM7.8b facility: Largest in Asia when completed

Malakoff unit starts work on power plant
New Straits Times, January 20, 2004

By RAVI NAMBIAR

MALAKOFF Bhd subsidiary Tanjung Bin Sdn Bhd has started construction on its 2,100MW power plant in Johor.

The RM7.8 billion coal-fired plant will be split into three 700MW units. It will start operating in August 2006 when the first unit is completed.

The second unit will be commissioned within six months in February 2007, while the third will come on stream in August 2007. The electricity generated will be sold exclusively to Tenaga Nasional Bhd, with all three units connected to Tenaga's national grid.

Johor Mentera Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman, performed the ground-breaking , ceremony for the plant at the project site in Tanjung Bin, about 35km from Pontian, yesterday. Also present was Malakoff Bhd managing director Ahmad Jauhari Yahya.

Ahmad Jauhari told reporters that some RM300 million had been spent on preliminary civil works at the site.

Malakoff has awarded the engineering, procurement and construction contract for the plant to a consortium headed by Sumitomo Corp of Japan and Zelan Holdings.

When completed, the Tanjung Bin plant will be the largest coal-fired plant in Asia .

Coal for the project will be sourced from Tenaga-owned coal mines in Kalimantan , Indonesia , and imports from Australia and South Africa .

The Tanjung Bin project is an integral component of a major master plan to transform southwest Johor into a new growth centre. Already taking the lead there is the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTF).

Some RM9 billion is expected to be spent over the next five years on several mega projects in the area. In addition to the power plant, RM800 million will be spent on PTP's expansion, a RM400 million bunkering centre on a man-made island, a RM700 bridge across Sungai Pulai and an exclusive petrochemical centre.
