interconnection projects in Visayas
Philippines Star, 21 January 2004
The National Transmission Crop.(Transco) led a series of roadshow for the launching of the government's flagship undertakings in the Visayas, the Cebu-Negros-Pansy (CNP) and the Leyte-Cebu interconnection uprating projects,
After Iloilo and Bacolod , the energy sector contingent heads to Cebu today where a power summit will be held to discuss the measures taken to respond to the growing power demand in the region.
Transco president Alan T. Ortiz said President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has ordered energy officials to meet with local government officials, business groups and non-government organizations in the three islands not only to underscore the government's commitment to accelerate the implementation of long-term solutions to the problem but also to enjoin the different groups to support power-related initiatives.
"When the issue of dwindling powersupply in the Cebu-Negros-Panay sub-grid was raised last year, Transco responded to the challenge. by vowing to fast-track the implementation of several transmission projects that will bring much needed additional power from the geothermal plants in Leyte . We have made good on our promise and we hope that investor confidence in the Visayas will be significantly boosted because of these efforts," Ortiz said.
The CNP project aims to double the load of the transmission lines from 100 megawatts (MW) to 200 MW among the three Visayas islands and optimize the use of indigenous power from the geothermal power plants in Leyte .
Transco has committed to fast-track the implementation of the $41.5-million Negros- Panay uprating and the $40-million Cebu- Negros interconnection projects. The Transco head also said that Energy Secretary Vincent S. Perez has given the green light to advance the Leyte-Mindanao link-up from 2011 to 2008.
