Blackout caused by tripped gas value
The Straits Times Interactive, 30 June, 2004
SINGAPORE - The Energy Market Authority (EMA) said on Wednesday it was a tripped value that disrupted natural gas suppliers from neighbouring Indonesia , causing widespread power failure across the island overnight.
EMA didn't specify what caused the tripped value at the receiving station operate by US firm ConocoPhillips, but said it shut down power supply to 30 per cent of Singapore .
The disrupting plunged thousand into darkness for two hours from 10pm on Tuesday.
Ms Choo Wai Chan, a spokesman for EMA, said that the West Natuna gas disruption affected three power plants.
Gas supply glitches from the same field have caused problems before.
Last November, supplies were disrupted when one of the West Natuna pipelines leaked. Singapore generators were able to switch to other sources before the power failed.
InAugust 2002, disruption of the Natuna gas flow tripped up seven plants, cutting off power to parts of Singapore for 90 minutes.-AP
