Renewable energy plant for Chiang Mai
The Nation, 4 May, 2004
The Chiang Mai Municipality yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding with a British firm involved in renewable energy that will lead to a Bt1.9-billion deal for power production.
City Mayor Boonlert Buranuprakan said SEPCOAsiaCo would deliver two incinerators within six months that would be used to turn solid waste into fuel at the municipality's waste treatment plant near Haiya Cemetery .
Following delivery the municipality, the supplier and investors would negotiate the contract for the construction of a new incineration plant geared for power production, Boonlert said.
"The negotiations are expected to be completed in a year and the planned construction will be subject to a public hearing," he said.
The construction site was likely to be one of three locations in Hod or Doi Tao districts or an area near Lamphun Industrial Estate, he said.
"On completion of the plant, the municipality is expected to generate earnings from electricity sales, cut down on waste treatment costs and reduce its reliance on landfill to 5 per cent of waste generated each year," he said.
