Egat plans gas plant in Songkhla
The Nations, September 18, 2003
THE ELECTRICITY GENERATING Authority of Thailand (Egat) plans to build a powerplant in Songkhla's Chana district, the site of the controversial Thai-Malaysian gas pipeline project.
The pipeline project met heated opposition, including several violent protests, before construction finally kicked off in July.
Phermsak Cheevavattananont, a manager at Trans Thai-Malaysia (TTM), said yesterday Egat would build the 700-MW power plant in 2008. The plant would use natural gas from the Malaysia-Thailand Joint Development Area (JDA) as fuel. TTM is in charge of constructing the gas pipeline and a gas separation plant.
"The power plant will bring electricity-production costs down and ensure there will be sufficient power supply for residents in the South;' Phermsak said.
BangchongNasae, an opponent of the project, said it was not economically worthwhile to use natural gas for power production.
"The country already has enough power supply; he said. Banchong urged the authorities to publicise the latest information so concerned parties could recommend solutions. "It would be better to have a public forum."
