Electricity: quick development but weakness remain

In the period of 1995 - 2001 investment capital for Electricity of Vietnam was VND49,727 billion. Value of industrial production of the sector in 2002 reached VND13,375 billion, accounting for 5.1 percent of total industrial production value of the whole industrial sector, average growth rate in period of 1996 -2002 was 13.2 percent.
Currently, total electricity out put was 8,806 MW , of which output of Vietnam Electricity is 8,194 MW , accounting for 93 percent of the whole system. Additionally, there were some independent electricity plants as Hiep Phuoc, Vedan, Amata, Nomura.
National grid has expanded into rural areas, covering up 506/517 districts throughout the country, accounting for 97.7 percent. In the past ten years, Vietnam 's electricity has quickly developed, but its weakness remain, namely capacity of the grid has not met demand; electricity in some regions is backward needing to be upgraded. Electricity loss on distribution was high, quality is not matched with requirement; technical troubles are often occurred. Productivity of the electric sector is low; to manage one MW of electricity, Vietnam needs 6.9 person, while Korea Republic needs 0.69 person, Japan needs 0.73 person, Australia 0.79 person, Malaysia 2.2 persons, Thailand 4.45 persons.
