Vietnam Economy, 24 September 2003

Vietnam 's energy conference under title "Vietnam Power - Gen Asia" has officially opened in Ho Chi Minh City on September 23, 2003 . Purpose of the conference is aimed at creating a general platform connecting the national and international partners in participating development of energy sector in Vietnam . The conference was held on the occasion that Vietnam plans up to 2010, Vietnam will annually spend US$2 billion to build electricity plants to raise Vietnam 's total energy capacity. With annual growth rate of 10-11 percent, Vietnam needs to consecutively increase annual energy capacity by about 1,000 MW to 2013. Vietnam needs technology and capital to develop 39 projects of energy as planned.

Powe - Gen Asia 2003 will be a good opportunity for investors to lure contracts and supply technical solutions for development of energy in the region.

According to Dr. Anil Malhotra, energy adviser of the World Bank, Vietnam has great potential on energy as coal, oil and hydro electricity , but their development should ensure environmental conditions and economic development. In the past 5 years, the World Bank has loaned Vietnam US$655 million for electricity development in rural areas.

On the conference, the foreign delegates will also discuss detailed subjects as market strategy, building, operating and maintaining electricity plants; planning on electricity system, energy resources, challenges for environment.
